Todd: Oh! Nicola: Yeah! so that was fine but then they took us out to sea which was a bit different. Yeah, because they made us set up our own equipment, I mean they still checked us and everything so we didn't die, but we had to put on our own equipment. We had a diving buddy who I was with, and I was with my friend Graham, who I was traveling with anyway, and we went down into the sea. We went down maybe fifteen meters. And they always say like Don't Panic just keep breathing normally and everything. But I did kind of panic a bit. Todd: Oh, no! Nicola: So then I rose to the surface really quickly, which you know, you're not supposed to do in diving. So I went up really quickly. Luckily we weren't deep enough to do any damage but my diving buddy Graham was having a great time down there looking at shipwrecks and didn't even notice that I was missing. Todd: What a terrible guy! Nicola: Yeah, I know. so, then... Todd: Wow! Did they fail him? I hope he failed the course? Nicola: No, he passed. He paid enough money. He passed. But it meant that I couldn't go diving for the rest of the day cause I had gone down quite deep, so that was a shame, but. Todd: That's terrible. But you didn't hurt yourself, you didn't come up to fast? Nicola: No, I was fine in the end, but it was a shame because that was the end of my diving day. But we had a few more days to do it. Todd: So now you are comfortable diving. You don't freak out anymore? Nicola: I don't freak out anymore, but I couldn't go diving now on my own because it has been so long. Todd: So, were you in a submersion program, or all your subjects in French. Ann: No, I went to an English high school but a lot of people in Montreal are in immersion programs. Todd: OK. Since you learned French, what do you think is the best way to learn language? Ann: I think that you have to like learning another language and if you have a possitive attitude then you can find learning another language fun rather than stressful so I think that I had a few French friends and we would practice and they would be very patient and I liked the fact that I could communicate using another language cause then you have another identity. Todd: You have your French identity? Ann: I do. Todd: OK. So what's your name in French? Ann: "Mono e Ann" Todd: Wow! I need to get myself a French name? Ann: Todd. Todd: OK. Thanks a lot Ann. Todd: Wow, so when you had a teleconference for example, how many students would be on the air this time. Anili: I guess around eight, in two different locations. And I would be in the third location. Todd: Wow, that's amazing! Anili: Yeah! Todd: Yeah! And how often would you be teaching like this? Anili: Well, the students were aged between 9 and 12 years old. They had two French lessons a week by teleconference. Todd: Wow, and how long was each lesson? Anili: 45 minutes. Todd: Great. Todd: OK, Kerri, I'm going to ask you about the news. Do you follow the news everyday?
Kerri: Sometimes.
Todd: How do you follow the news?
Kerri: Well, in Japan mostly the radio or the internet.
Todd: Oh, really. OK. What radio station?
Kerri: NPR, but on the military station.
Todd: OK. And what internet websites do you listen to?
Kerri: Well, usually it is just AP news or whatever.
Todd: OK. How much of the news do you think is true?
Kerri: I don't know. That's a tough question. I think that because there're so many journalists that often what makes into the papers is fairly accurate, but unfortunately some people leak rmation that is untrue to sway public opinion, so you have to kind of weed through things and consider why that news story is made public.
Todd: Yeah. How do most people in your country get the news?
Kerri: I think most people in the states get the news from TV and from the main broadcasting stations. The evening news sort of thing.

Simon: Playing soccer.
Todd: OK. Wow, you play soccer?
Simon: Of course!
Todd: How often do you play?
Simon: Now I don't play, but before I played about three or four times a week.
Todd: Wow, that's quite a bit. -- How e you don't play now?
Simon: I've retired.
Todd: You've retired.
Simon: Yeah, I came to Japan. I had a soccer team, but now that I work in Japan I can't play for my soccer team at home.
Todd: OK. Do you watch soccer on TV?
Simon: These days? No! No time. Always working at Seitoku.
Todd: OK. Yeah, we, we all have to work I guess. Um..who is the best soccer player in the world?
Simon: That's hard to say. Right now, there's a kid named Ronaldino for Brazil. Maybe he will be the best.
Todd: OK. Nice. An..and what is you favorite soccer team?
Simon: Deep Cove Royals. That's my soccer team.

Matt: Well, now I'm in Japan at the moment, I'm eating a lot of sushi.

Matt: Well, we either buy it in a supermarket, kind of buy a tray, about a thousand yen, or we'll go down to the conveyor belt restaurant just down the side the university on our way home.

Matt: I don't know the Japanese word for that. We call it the conveyor belt restaurant.
Todd: When you go to sushi, how much does it cost?
Matt: Well, it's 130 yen for one plate, and usually there is two of us that go and usually we spend about one and a half thousand yen 1,500, about ten plates.
Todd: Ten plates!
Matt: Yeah! We like it!
